WWE Friday Night Smackdown January 29th, 2021

DB talked to open the show and talked about wanting to win the Rumble and get to Mania. As he talked about how wild it gets in the Rumble and how you can expect anything, AJ Styles came out.

DB asked why he was here and AJ/Omos said there was a quarterly rule in WWE where anyone could come over to the other show. 

AJ said it looked like he had one foot out the door and DB challenged him to a match. AJ accepted and pushed him. DB went back at him and they did the same spot they always do with the camera looking up at Omos.

DB challenged him to come without Omos tonight and AJ and Omos just laughed and DB said he would beat him either way.

The announced a showdown with Owens and Reigns tonight, and by showdown, it's probably some kind of talking segment.

Bayley was interviewed in the back where they talked about the obstacle course last week. Bayley celebrated being able to hit her with the hoop. She said she watched Bianca's 24/7 Chronicle and said Bianca ran from all of her problems all of her life. Then she said after she beats her, she can go crawl into the darkest hole of her life.

Bianca Belair vs Bayley

Bayley has control early until she gets suplexed. Bayley hits a sliding clothesline and starts working the arm. Bayley starts pulling on the hair then Bianca flips out and starts flurrying her. Bianca goes after her on the ropes and Bayley pulls down her arm over the middle rope. Bianca comes back though with a standing moonsault landing onto Bayley's back. We go to break and come back with Bianca hitting an alley oop reverse powerbomb on her. Bianca beats up on Bayley in the corner and Bayley grabs her arm and DDT's her from the buckles. Cole talks about how Bayley is jealous and Bayley yells, "I'm not jealous, Michael". Bayley hits a knee to Bianca's jaw and abuses her arm more. Bianca goes for something but her arm gives out and Bayley escapes. Bayley then throws her, but she cartwheels out of it then hits a kiss of death on Bayley to win. Nothing wrong with this with Bayley sticking to the armwork throughout the match.

 Bianca gets interviewed after on the ramp. Bianca says she will never apologize for being herself. She says this is the biggest win of her career which I doubt then says she will win the Woman's Royal Rumble and put the EST in Wrestlemania.

Cesaro goes to talk to AJ and Omos but they cut out as soon as they cut in and we see nothing.

King Corbin vs Dominic

 

Corbin gets jumped during his entrance by Dominic. Rey is on commentary. Graves asks if this is something Rey taught Dom. Dom flurries on Corbin early and catches him over the middle rope. Dom dives on the back of Corbin. Dominic goes for something from the wheelbarrow position and is backdropped twice. Corbin hits a nice punch to the face and Rey complains that Dom isn't listening to his advice.

Corbin spears the ringpost on accident then Dom dropkicks him from the middle rope. Corbin gets set up for the 619 but catches Dom's legs. Dom hits a hurricanrana to send Corbin into the buckles then Dom takes a botched back body drop into the ropes. Dom does a satellite headscissors. Dom misses a springboard dropkick and Corbin slams him over the top rope then hits end of days for the win. Dom was sloppy here. 

Corbin stares down Rey after and tries to ram him into the post, but Rey puts him in then Rey hits la silla from the apron onto him. 

Big E meets up with Sonya Deville in the back. He gives her a dollar to find out what his Royal Rumble number is. He also says he has an Arby's coupon for her. The Miz and Morrison then jump in and ask about Pearce, who Soyna says is out due to injuries from last week. Miz again teases cashing in this weekend and Morrison compares it to the Gamestop stock market stuff this week. Sonya says she has Rumble stuff and has to go, then Big E says the same thing. E makes fun of them and they brawl in the back with officials breaking it up.

They announce an exclusive match for WWE Backstage tomorrow with the winner of Tamina vs Natalya becoming the #30 entrant into the Women's Royal Rumble. I like them having matches for spots on one hand but I don't like if they imply that the entrance order can be fixed.

Sasha arrives in the back and runs into Reginald and one of Lucha House Party. Reginald gives her a bottle of wine from Carmella to celebrate Carmella's win this Sunday. Sasha tries to flirt with him and says she likes him. Sasha asks if Reginald can help her find wine. She asks whats the best wine Carmella can drink with a broken jaw, as she will break her jaw this weekend. Sasha then says something but the fake crowd noise is too loud to hear it.

They go over the Owens/Reigns feud and say they will talk next.

Sami Zayn tries to film backstage and talks to Nakamura. He says it is suspicious that Raw guys are on the show.  Sami said he helped Nakamura a lot in the past and he needs Nakamura's help now. He says everyone is out to get him. He said everything Nak has done has been thanks to Sami and asks for Nak to watch his back. Nak says "go to hell".

Reigns and Owens talk in split screen. Owens said he has beaten Roman but he has gotten screwed. Owens says at last man standing, there is nothing Roman and friends can do to keep him down. Paul says Owens will not talk this way about Reigns. Reigns asks what kind of man Owens' father was and Owens tells him to watch it. Reigns says Owens' dad didn't teach Owens his limitations. Reigns says Owens is inferior and will never be champ. He told him to blame his family. Roman said Owens is a fool and so is his father. Owens says he knows this is about Owens talking about his grandfather last week. Owens told him to watch it again because Sunday, they will wrestle.

Roman says Owens' grandfather would want Owens to recognize him as tribal chief. Owens says he is delusional. Owens calls him a community level actor and a fake tribal chief. Owens flips out and Roman turns off his monitor to end the segment as Owens gets angrier. This wasn't that interesting and it was very hard to hear most of it with the loud fake crowd noise.

Daniel Bryan vs AJ Styles

Cesaro is on commentary. AJ and DB monkey flip each other. DB goes to work on AJ's arm early and DB hits a nice kick to AJ's chest while he runs. Sami comes out as DB goes to the top and DB gets knocked down to the floor. We go to break and we return, AJ still has control. DB hits his flying forearm as he comes off the ropes and flying kicks him in the corner. DB hurricanrana's AJ off the top for 2. Sami goes up to Cole and says they tried to keep him off the show tonight.

AJ puts a calf crusher onto a downed Daniel Bryan. AJ goes for a phenomenal forearm but is caught and put into the Yes Lock. Big E then comes down and nails Sami, then throws him over the table onto a chair. Cesaro and E then go at it and DB dives out and nails both Sami and Cesaro on a dive to AJ. Sami then comes in and hits DB as chaos breaks loose. Nakamura then comes out and nails AJ and Sami. Nak and Cesaro stare down and Sami pushes Nak into Cesaro. Cesaro, Sami and AJ all get thrown out. This leads to:

Big E, Daniel Bryan and Shinsuke Nakamura vs AJ Styles, Sami Zayn and Cesaro

Nakamura does his slide under german suplex to Cesaro who is on the middle rope. We aren't sure whether Suzu Suzuki or Nak invented that. Cesaro hits some nice knees onto E then Sami starts jabbing E. E hits a nice leapfrog then back elbows Sami. DB and E hit a double hiptoss on Sami. Sami chop blocks DB hard then AJ bangs DB's leg off the rope as we go to break.

Back from break and we return to Cesaro giant swinging DB then putting him in a single leg crab. DB and Sami fight off top, but DB knocks him off and hits a missile dropkick from the top. E gets in and hits some belly to belly suplexes on Cesaro and Cesaro comes back with springboard twisting euro uppercut from the middle rope. E hits a bad corner rock bottom on a Cesaro who was rushing in. As E is getting ready to finish Cesaro, Miz and Morrison come down. Nakamura tries to stop them and gets nailed then E is 3v1'd with Sami getting involved. Miz holds up E and Morrison does a springboard kick to him. Otis then comes out and beats up Miz and Morrison with some great throws. Otis then spinning clotheslines Morrison. Otis then does a worm and double elbows Miz and Morrison.

We went to break and when we returned this became a handicap match with:

Nakamura, Big E, Otis and Daniel Bryan vs The Miz, John Morrison, Sami Zayn, Cesaro and AJ Styles

Miz and DB go outside and Miz drops DB's knee on a table. Miz then figure fours him. DB punches Miz out of the figure four and Sami hits a blue thunder bomb on DB. The heels all get a little in on DB then AJ and DB both try to crossbody each other in a mid-air collision. The heels all pull the faces off the apron and pummel them on the outside. Sheamus then comes down to help and is tagged in somehow, so I guess we have:

Sheamus, Nakamura, Big E, Otis and Daniel Bryan vs The Miz, John Morrison, Sami Zayn, Cesaro and AJ Styles

Sheamus hits a bunch of offense on three heels, then backbreakers and texas cloverleafs Sami. Morrison breaks it up and takes a slam from Otis, then Cesaro double stomps him. We do a finisher train here and Sheamus wins this with a brogue kick on Sami. Then he gets jumped by Miz and Morrison. Braun Strowman then comes out to save Sheamus and beats up the heels. He running powerslams Cesaro to end the show.

So many questions about this main event. Why would the faces accept a handicap match? How was Sheamus running in not a DQ?

Overall thoughts: Had the show not had the last segment turn into a larger and larger match, it would have been an eh show with nothing too special. The final segment though had so many logic questions and turned this one into a not good show.
